Video game publisher Ubisoft just might be the next company to get on board using blockchain for its industry benefits. According to Ubisoft’s Strategic Innovation Lab through their director of trends and insights, Lidwine Sauer, the company’s interest specifically lies in blockchain’s ability to offer to users the ability to uniquely own digital items.
With this kind of technology, they can “finally have real digital collectables that cannot be replicated by anyone and can be 100 percent owned by you.” She further explained that, “Thanks to blockchain, we can now have the equivalent of a digital Picasso, with the advantage that it’s a lot more difficult to steal something on the blockchain than to steal a Picasso.”
Among the specific uses that Ubisoft have in mind for blockchain technology pertains to a one-of –a-kind downloadable content DLC, although not necessarily limiting its application to this alone. “We want to go further than that. We feel there’s something even more interesting to find [through the blockchain], and we’re int he process of trying to find that interesting thing,” said Sauer.
